Anyone still convinced of the usefulness of CAPTCHAs should really read this article at arstechnica.com. Because it chronicles a growing trend of new schemes for CAPTCHAs being introduced, and then almost immediately being cracked by either bots or networks of human operators willing to do such work (for what we would consider a pittance — meaning they are still cost-effective for spammers).
